Department of abdominal surgical oncology

The Department offers standard and high tech surgical treatment to patients with tumors of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract.

The Department treats:

  • stomach cancer
  • small intestine cancer
  • colon cancer
  • rectal cancer
  • anal cancer
  • pancreatic cancer
  • familial polyposis of the colon
  • hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer
  • benign neoplasms of the colon and rectum
  • peritoneal carcinomatosis

Many years of experience in treating various diseases of the stomach, and the colon and rectum allowed the Department to develop a unique approach to the diagnosis and treatment of such diseases in accordance with the world standards.

The Department specializes in:

  • Treatment of malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectum. The Department has developed and extensively uses excisional function-preserving surgeries that allow to maintain urine voiding and sexual function and do not require a stoma, even in cases of low cancer.
  • Reconstructive and plastic surgeries for patients with a permanent stoma after obstruction resection of the colon. The Department’s surgeons perform high-tech unique surgeries which allow to restore natural passing of stools and significantly improve the quality of life of such patients.
  • Minimally invasive interventions for benign diseases of the colon and rectum. The Department uses transanal approaches to remove villous adenomas in the rectum, which allow to avoid abdominal surgeries altogether and have other advantages, such as a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery.
  • Modern diagnostic and treatment techniques of hereditary forms of diseases of the colon (hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer and family polyposis). At present, surgical removal of polyps is the only effective measure for surgical prevention of colon and rectal cancer.

When performing stomach and intestine surgeries, the Department uses surgical staplers which relieve patients of many consequences of the disease.

The use of surgical staples:

  • ensures stronger closure of wounds;
  • reduces the length of a surgery by 25-40%, which, in turn, reduces the time when a patient is under anesthesia;
  • allows, in many cases, to avoid bringing the intestinal opening out onto the anterior abdominal wall;
  • allows quicker tissue regeneration;
  • allows to perform surgeries on hard-to-access areas where manual suturing is impossible.

The Department is dedicated to ensuring the shortest possible hospital stay of a patient at the best treatment outcomes. For this purpose, the Department uses the most cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment equipment.

Most surgeries are performed using minimally invasive approach.

By working closely with other departments and divisions of the Center, the Department can also make extensive use of combination and multimodality treatment methods. This allows to reduce the extent of a possible surgery or to avoid a surgery altogether. For example, chemoradiation used to treat rectal cancer can significantly reduce the size of a tumor, and, in some cases, make it completely disappear.

The Department has capabilities of treating complex cases when a patient has various concurrent diseases of the cardiovascular system, the urinary system, the endocrine system and the musculoskeletal system.

The specialists of the Department pursue research into the development of various techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal conditions.

The Department is headed by Dr Aleksey M. Karachun, D.Sc. and a professor at the Oncology Department of the I.I. Mechnikov North-Western State Medical University.
