Department of endoscopy
The Department of Endoscopy of the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology specializes in diagnosis and treatment of malignant neoplasms and pre-malignancies of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, the bronchi and the windpipe. Annually, the Department performs 4,000 investigative endoscopic procedures and about 1,000 treatment endoscopic procedures. The Department is a highly specialized research and clinical department of the Center. The Department is a clinical setting of the Endoscopy Department of the I.I. Mechnikov North-Western State Medical University and the Oncology Department of the Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University.
Endoscopy is an area in medicine whose evolution directly relies on the development and implementation of new equipment and tools. Cutting-edge equipment installed in the Department, such as digital endoscopes with high resolution (HD quality) and most advanced digital endoscopy towers, electrosurgical units, an argon plasma coagulation unit, and a state-of-the-art endoscopic ultrasound device, allows the Department to expand its range of diagnostic capabilities and to perform endoscopic surgeries.

Surgical treatment using advanced minimally-invasive endovideosurgical technologies. Endoscopic treatment of early cancer of the esophagus, stomach and large intestine; endoscopic removal of submucosal masses of the gastrointestinal tract.
The Department of Endoscopy regularly teams up with the clinical departments of the Center. For example, the specialists of the Department provide endoscopic assistance during thoracic and abdominal surgeries, and deal with the issues of prevention of immediate complications after surgeries.
The Department is headed by Dr Oleg B. Tkachenko, who is an endoscopist with the first qualification degree, and a current member of the Russian Society of Endoscopy and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Professor Aleksandr M. Shcherbakov, D.Sc., is the head of research at the Department.
