Surgery department of bone, soft tissue and skin tumors
The Surgery Department of Bone, Soft Tissue and Skin Tumors of the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology uses technological innovations and translational research to treat tumors of the human musculoskeletal system, extraorgan tumors and tumors of the skin.
The specialists of the Department specialize in providing combination treatment and early diagnosis of such malignancies as:
- bone tumors (osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, giant-cell tumor of the bone, chordoma, etc.)
- soft tissue tumors (synovial sarcoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma, etc.), including extraorgan retroperitoneal sarcomas
- malignant neoplasms of the skin (melanoma, basal-cell carcinoma, squamous cell skin cancer, Bowen's disease, Merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, adnexal carcinoma)
The Department uses the following high-tech surgical techniques
- to treat bone tumors:
— limb-sparing surgeries with bone excision and one-stage endoprosthesis replacement and repair of defects
— interscapular-thoracic excisions and amputations of various levels, and interileoabdominal excisions and amputations of various levels
— pelvic bone excisions with one-stage endoprosthesis replacement

- to treat malignant neoplasms of the skin:
— skin tumor excision, followed by various types of reconstructive procedures
— skin tumor excision, in combination with intraoperative photodynamic therapy and hyperthermia therapy
— isolated regional hyperthermic chemoperfusion of the limbs – a type of local (regional) chemotherapy, which enhances the delivery of medications to the tumor, while minimizing their absorption into the bloodstream. Thus, it is a maximally aggressive cancer treatment technique, which, at the same time, causes the least systemic toxicity.
— biopsy of sentinel lymph nodes in cases of melanoma – it is a procedure in which the sentinel lymph node is located, removed and examined to determine whether it has metastases, which, then, is used to select the best treatment plan
- to treat soft tissue tumors:
— isolated regional hyperthermic chemoperfusion of the limbs
— organ-sparing surgeries for various types of soft tissue tumors, in combination with different kinds of reconstructive procedures (reconstruction using a free skin flap, reconstruction with a free skin and muscle flap using microsurgery techniques, reconstruction with a pedicle flap)
— removal of retroperitoneal tumors with multiple-organ resection
The Department uniquely conducts weekly multidisciplinary team meetings uniting professionals from different disciplines, such as surgical oncologists, radiologists, chemotherapists and pathologists, to discuss all clinical cases of patients with sarcomas and decide upon the best treatment plan for each patient, which not only enhances the quality of the healthcare services provided by the Department, but also speeds up the diagnosis and treatment of such a rare disease.
The Department specializes in primary diagnosis of tumors located in the abovementioned body sites and combination treatment of such tumors, including neoadjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy, surgical therapy and adjuvant therapy.

- An initial consultation with a physician at the Center

- After being discharged from the inpatient clinic, if required as per the applicable medical care standards, a patient may be referred to a specialist in chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This ensures that the multidisciplinary approach to treat cancer patients is being used.
- Patients undergo regular medical check-ups to monitor the progression of the disease.
