Bacteria culture tests

Bacteria culture tests are a set of tests used to identify the cause of an infection by culturing bacteria from biological substances of the human body (blood, urine, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.) and to determine the resistance of the cultured pathogenic microbes to anti-microbial drugs.

Bacteria culture tests are performed at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the Center.

Bacteria culture tests are the main technique to determine the cause of most bacterial infections.

The advantages of bacteria culture tests are:

• high specificity, which is essential to determine the cause of an infection;
• high sensitivity, which allows to identify even a small content of microorganisms in tested substances;
• it allows to determine the characteristics of cultured microorganisms which is essential to select an efficient treatment plan (antimicrobial drugs, antifungal drugs, phage therapy, etc.)

The main disadvantage of bacteria culture tests is that the results may take up to 5-7 days.

However, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the Center uses cutting-edge equipment which allows to decrease the time of the results to up to 72 hours and determine the resistance of cultured microorganisms to 22-28 antimicrobial drugs.
